In several public comments, it appeared as if Jerry Manuel didn't think he had enough talent on his team to compete. But in a private Mets clubhouse, the mind-set was different.
Mets probable pitcher
Tim Redding
- #44 RHP
- (1-3) 6.35 ERA 30 SO
It all fell apart for Redding in a hurry on Saturday against the Yankees. After giving up two hits in the first five innings, Redding allowed four runs on four hits on four consecutive pitches in the sixth, leading to a 5-0 Yankees' win. Redding is 2-2 with a 3.79 ERA in 11 career starts against the Pirates, including an 0-1 mark with a 6.38 ERA in five starts at PNC Park. Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson owns a .385 career average against Redding in 26 at-bats. Redding is glad to finish June -- historically his worst month -- and enter July, when he's 9-11 with a 4.91 ERA in his career.

Newly acquired reliever Joel Hanrahan hopes that a change of scenery brings a change of luck.
Pirates probable pitcher
Paul Maholm
- #28 LHP
- (5-4) 4.35 ERA 63 SO
After laboring through much of June, Maholm closed it out with a bang in his final start of the month. Not only did Maholm snap a personal two-game losing streak, but he did it with the benefit of his sinker, a pitch that had eluded him at times this month. Maholm was also notably efficient, as he typically is when he's at his sharpest. Maholm is 3-2 with a 3.65 ERA in six career starts against the Mets.

Worth the wait (39-39) (36-43)
Mets 9, Pirates 8
(10)
The Mets overcame two rain delays, an early five-run deficit and a blown save by star closer Francisco Rodriguez to upend the Pirates on Ryan Church's RBI single in the 10th inning in what was the team's biggest comeback win of the season.

Adam LaRoche hit a game-tying two-run home run in the ninth inning off Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, but it wasn't enough to help the Pirates overcome the fact that starter Paul Maholm was unable to take advantage of an early five-run lead.
