Mora takes time to regroup in Anaheim

Melvin Mora asked for the day off on Thursday to clear his mind and he'll try and get back in the swing of things against the Angels on Friday night.

Orioles probable pitcher

David Hernandez

  • #63 RHP
  • (1-2) 4.19 ERA 12 SO
Hernandez pitched well in place of Koji Uehara his last time out, working into the sixth inning, and he was victimized only by a two-run home run by slugger Adam Dunn. Hernandez has worked into the sixth in all three of his starts and has allowed three earned runs or fewer in two of them. The right-hander has walked three batters or more in two of his three starts but has yet to ring up more than three strikeouts.

Santana hopes to come back strong

The Angels will get another member of their rotation back on Friday as Ervin Santana returns from the disabled list to take on the Orioles.

Angels probable pitcher

Ervin Santana

  • #54 RHP
  • (1-3) 7.47 ERA 21 SO
Santana was unable to make it through the fifth inning in taking the loss in his most recent effort against the Rays at Tropicana Field, yielding six earned runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Santana, second in the AL in strikeouts last season and fourth in innings pitched, has worked only 31 1/3 innings in his six starts with 21 strikeouts against 13 walks. His velocity has not been close to the consistent mid-90s of last season, but he was at 91 in a Minor League rehab outing on Sunday night. Santana has struggled at home in three starts (0-1, 14.29 ERA) but is 30-15 in 61 career starts at Angel Stadium with a 3.69 ERA. He's 2-2 with a 4.60 ERA in seven career starts against the Orioles.

Early birds get the win (36-44) (43-35)

Orioles 6, Angels 4

Offense leads O's

The Orioles got ahead early on a two-run double by Luke Scott in the first and Aubrey Huff added insurance with a three-run homer in the third. That was all rookie David Hernandez would need, as he pitched 6 2/3 solid innings and gave up just three runs for the second win of his career.

Santana falls in return

Ervin Santana took the mound for the first time since June 11 and looked a little rusty early on. He loaded the bases in the first inning and was lucky to only give up two runs as a double by Luke Scott hit the wall. The Angels couldn't do much offensively and Santana took the loss.
