McGehee gets second life with Brewers

Since being waived by the Cubs last October, Casey McGehee has worked his way into the Brewers' everyday lineup. The infielder has made his first return to Wrigley Field to oppose his former club.

Brewers probable pitcher

Jeff Suppan

  • #37 RHP
  • (5-6) 4.86 ERA 47 SO
Suppan gave up three runs in a 41-pitch second inning in his last start but managed to give the Brewers 5 2/3 innings. He bounced back with a four-pitch third inning to extend himself into the sixth, giving up five runs on nine hits. Suppan faced the Mets earlier this year, earning the victory in a 4-2 Brewers win on April 19. He went six innings in that outing, giving up the two runs on eight hits, while striking out four. Suppan has faced the Mets 10 times in his career, going 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA.

With the Cubs off to a mediocre start, Lou Piniella was questioned about his passion for managing. He left no doubt Wednesday when he was ejected, and the Cubs skipper maintains there's a lot of baseball left to play for Chicago to make a run.

Cubs probable pitcher

Carlos Zambrano

  • #38 RHP
  • (4-3) 3.69 ERA 66 SO
Zambrano is winless in his past four starts, and he was roughed up by the White Sox in his last outing. The right-hander gave up five runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings, his shortest outing since a 4 2/3-inning start on May 22. Manager Lou Piniella's assessment? "He was so-so," Piniella said. Zambrano has faced the Brewers once -- on April 11 -- and did not receive a decision. He finished June with a 1-1 record and a 2.91 ERA in five starts.

Cubs win as Fox trots (42-38) (39-38)

Cubs 2, Brewers 1 (10)

Wild finish

Mark DiFelice's final delivery -- a borderline pitch to Jake Fox with two outs in the 10th inning -- was ruled a ball, sending the Brewers to successive defeats to the rival Cubs. The loss wasted a strong start from Jeff Suppan, who tossed seven frames of one-run ball.

A walk in the park

Kosuke Fukudome kept the Cubs knotted with the Brewers by cutting down Jeff Suppan at the plate to end the seventh, setting the stage for an extra-inning triumph that saw the winning run come home on Jake Fox's bases-loaded free pass with two outs in the 10th.
