Podsednik deserves trip to St. Louis

Back at the start of the 2009 season, when Scott Podsednik was sitting at home in Texas, being selected as an All-Star had to be quite a distance removed from his thought process.

White Sox probable pitcher

Clayton Richard

  • #54 LHP
  • (3-1) 4.48 ERA 52 SO
After struggling in his two previous starts, Richard had a positive outing against the Indians on Tuesday. Although he gave up four runs in six innings, three of those runs came after he returned from a 30-minute rain delay. He earned his first complete game when the game was called in the top of the seventh inning because of rain. Richard pitched six innings and gave up four runs on four hits while striking out six and walking one. In his last start against the Royals on May 29, Richard pitched seven innings and gave up just two runs. The left-hander is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in five appearances -- two starts -- against the Royals in his career.

Brian Bannister has had far more success during the day than at night, and has no explanation for it. Though he typically struggles against the White Sox, Sunday's game is during the day, a good thing for the Royals.

Royals probable pitcher

Brian Bannister

  • #19 RHP
  • (5-6) 3.93 ERA 53 SO
Bannister was very sharp against the Twins last Tuesday night, but he lost, 2-1, because of one home run and one unearned run. He worked seven innings, allowing six hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Of the other 15 outs, six were groundouts, which indicates that Bannister, a fly-ball pitcher, was getting a good share of balls hit on the ground. He's given up just nine earned runs in 34 innings over his last five starts for an ERA of 2.12. The White Sox gave Bannister one of his toughest times all season, burning him for seven runs on 10 hits on May 29.

Royals hit way to split of series (42-40) (35-46)

Royals 6, White Sox 3

Richard's day short

Clayton Richard gave the White Sox only 3 2/3 innings and was touched for four runs on eight hits, and D.J. Carrasco was also ineffective in relief of Richard. Jermaine Dye hit his 20th homer, but Chicago was mostly quiet offensively.

Good offense

Miguel Olivo hit a two-run homer, Alberto Callaspo had two hits and scored twice and four other Royals had two hits. Brian Bannister put up a strong start, going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits for the victory.
