Despite a formidable first half of the season, Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens missed out on being chosen for his first All-Star Game. Even so, the 23-year-old right-hander gets to pitch on the national stage when the Braves face the Cubs on ESPN on Monday night.

Braves probable pitcher

Jair Jurrjens

  • #49 RHP
  • (6-6) 2.73 ERA 74 SO
After routinely encountering bad luck in June, Jurrjens opened July by seeing his no-hit bid against the Phillies end with a two-out single in the seventh. That lone hit didn't prevent Jurrjens from winning for the first time during a four-start span that has been highlighted with a 2.45 ERA. When the 23-year-old right-hander aggressively attacks the zone early in the count, he has found routine success. He has limited opponents to a .240 batting average, but left-handed hitters are batting .296 against Jurrjens. This will be his first career start against the Cubs.

Aramis leads trio set to come off DL

Aramis Ramirez, who's been out since May 9 with a separated left shoulder, is set to return in the opener vs. the Braves along with fellow DL members Angel Guzman and Reed Johnson.

Cubs probable pitcher

Randy Wells

  • #36 RHP
  • (3-3) 2.43 ERA 45 SO
Wells won his third game of the season and career by tossing seven innings in a 4-1 win against the Pirates on July 1. He gave up just one run and has surrendered just five runs in his last three starts, winning all three. Wells has faced the Braves once this season, giving up two runs (one earned) in seven innings to get a no-decision. In four home starts this year, Wells is 1-2 with a 3.09 ERA.

All Wells and good (39-43) (41-39)

Cubs 4, Braves 2

Comeback short

Jair Jurrjens struggled early, giving up two runs in each of the first two innings, but he gave the Braves a chance to climb back in. They scored single runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings -- the latter on Nate McLouth's home run -- but they were unable to take the opener.

Starter effective

Though he struggled in the fourth inning, Randy Wells limited the damage in that frame and was otherwise strong, earning his fourth straight win. He was backed by Kosuke Fukudome's two hits, run scored and RBI and Derrek Lee's two-run homer. Aramis Ramirez was hitless in his return.
