Cardinals recall Stavinoha, Barden

The Cardinals recalled two familiar names on Tuesday, as Nick Stavinoha and Brian Barden returned to the club.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Todd Wellemeyer

  • #37 RHP
  • (7-7) 5.44 ERA 61 SO
Wellemeyer had arguably his best start of the season on Thursday after discovering a flaw in his delivery that led to him drifting toward third base during his delivery, causing him to land on the third base side of the mound and be forced to throw across his body. His pitches were flat and opponents weren't missing them. But he went 7 1/3 innings on Thursday and gave up just two runs, on a two-run shot by Aaron Rowand on his last pitch of the game. Wellemeyer appears to have figured things out and says he now must continue to hammer home his fluid delivery.

Brewers set pre-break pitching plan

Seth McClung is out of the Brewers' rotation and it seems like Manny Parra will be back soon as the Brewers have set their pitching plan heading into the All-Star break.

Brewers probable pitcher

Jeff Suppan

  • #37 RHP
  • (5-6) 4.60 ERA 51 SO
Suppan has pitched one good outing against the Cardinals this season and one poor. He beat them, 1-0, on May 16 in St. Louis with eight shutout innings, then lost two starts later while allowing five runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. For his career, the former Cardinal is 7-3 against St. Louis with a 3.31 ERA in 13 starts.

Little hit, big win for Brewers (46-40) (44-40)

Brewers 5, Cardinals 4

Cardinals fall short

The Cardinals took a short-lived lead in the fourth thanks to a four-run rally, but were unable to score after that. In the ninth inning, St. Louis found itself with the bases loaded and in need of a run to tie the game, but Yadier Molina grounded into a fielder's choice.

Crew evens series

An infield single isn't what people have come to expect from Prince Fielder, but that's what he delivered in the eighth inning and it was exactly what the Brewers needed as it put them ahead for good and brought them within one game of the Cards for first place in the NL Central.
