Trever Miller has been putting pressure on hitters this season and, despite being a veteran, has found a new way to fool them.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Chris Carpenter

  • #29 RHP
  • (6-3) 2.32 ERA 58 SO
That one rough start was only a hiccup for Carpenter, as he returned to form on Sunday in Cincinnati. He has been outstanding in just about every game this year, and he's doing it with a full array of weapons -- fastballs, cutters, curveballs and changeups. It's tough to hit Carpenter even when he's not at his very best. When he's sharp, good luck.

Cubs prepare for visit from Pujols

The Cubs are getting ready to host the Cardinals, and that means Albert Pujols is on his way to town. But with the series kicking off Friday, most of Chicago's squad looks forward to the challenge.

Cubs probable pitcher

Rich Harden

  • #40 RHP
  • (5-5) 5.35 ERA 77 SO
Harden has not been consistent this season. On June 29, he held the Pirates to one run on nine hits over seven innings. In his next start, against the Brewers, he gave up seven runs on eight hits over two-plus innings, the shortest start of the right-hander's career. Harden has now given up seven or more runs six times in his career. It was the 10th time in his career and fourth time this season in which Harden has given up two or more home runs in a game. He may wish he could pitch only on the road. Harden has given up 19 earned runs in 19 innings across his past four home starts.

Early birds: Cards dominate opener (48-40) (41-42)

Cardinals 8, Cubs 3

Dandy duo delivers

Ryan Ludwick went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while Albert Pujols belted his 32nd home run, an RBI triple and scored three times to lead the Cardinals past the Cubs. Chris Carpenter allowed three runs on seven hits, fanning six, in six innings to earn his seventh victory of the season.

Opener goes awry

Derrek Lee erased an early deficit with a three-run home run, his 17th of the season and sixth this month, but the Cubs couldn't contain the first-place Cardinals. Rich Harden allowed four runs in five innings, and Aaron Heilman allowed four of his own in one inning of relief.
