Thompson likely to make last start

Kyle Lohse is slated to come off the disabled list to start the opener of a doubleheader Sunday, and Brad Thompson seems to be the most likely candidate to lose his rotation spot after Saturday's start against the Cubs.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Brad Thompson

  • #48 RHP
  • (2-5) 4.92 ERA 19 SO
This may well be Thompson's last stand. It's expected that Kyle Lohse will return to the St. Louis rotation over the weekend, and if he does, Thompson is probably the odd man out. He has gone several starts without a particularly good one, though he also hasn't been particularly bad. Thompson needs to keep the ball low, because he doesn't have the stuff to get away with mistakes up in the strike zone.

Slumping Soriano aims to clear mind

Sometimes, you can think too much. Alfonso Soriano says that may be what's happening to him lately. The Cubs' left fielder is trying to deal with a slump that has lasted longer than he's ever experienced.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ted Lilly

  • #30 LHP
  • (8-6) 3.32 ERA 97 SO
The left-hander, who will be the Cubs' lone All-Star representative, picked up his 13th quality start in his last outing. Lilly held the Brewers to two runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings, while striking out nine. He's now 5-1 at Wrigley with a sub 2.00 ERA. He lost to the Cardinals May 19 in St. Louis, giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings.

Ted terrific: All-Star in 100-wins club (48-41) (42-42)

Cubs 5, Cardinals 2

Cardinals handled

Ryan Ludwick, who drove in four in the opener, ignited the Cardinals with an RBI double, but that would be all the Cards would muster over Ted Lilly's eight innings. St. Louis brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Brad Thompson's shaky 4 2/3 innings dug too deep a hole.

Cubs' win stars Lilly

All-Star Ted Lilly dominated the Cardinals over eight innings to earn his 100th career victory. Jeff Baker hit a two-out, two-run single in a three-run first inning and Alfonso Soriano capped a two-run fifth with a two-out RBI single that scored Derrek Lee, who left with neck spasms.
