Clutch hits eluding Tigers

Lately, the Tigers haven't had enough players coming up with the key hits. Detroit has scored just four runs in the first two games of its series with New York, and two of those came on solo home runs.

Tigers probable pitcher

Edwin Jackson

  • #36 RHP
  • (7-4) 2.52 ERA 97 SO
Though Jackson needed just four pitches to complete his perfect inning of work in Tuesday's All-Star Game, he'll get the extra day of rest over Justin Verlander, who did not pitch at all. Jackson tossed six scoreless innings against the Yankees April 28 at Comerica Park, one of many solid outings in the first half that didn't earn him a win. He ended the first half with five straight quality starts, but won only one of them.

Zimmer among Old Timers returning

Cooler heads have prevailed after Don Zimmer walked away from the Yankees in 2003. The fan favorite will receive loud cheers on Sunday as a first-time attendee to Old-Timers' Day, the 63rd annual edition and the first one at this Yankee Stadium.

Yankees probable pitcher

Joba Chamberlain

  • #62 RHP
  • (4-2) 4.25 ERA 78 SO
Chamberlain hopes the second half goes a little better than the first half ended. He has struggled with efficiency and continues to pile up no-decisions, stringing together three straight. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings on July 10 against the Angels, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and not figuring in the decision of a 10-6 Yankees loss. In the 23-year-old's past three starts, he has allowed 16 runs (10 earned) and allowed opponents to bat .415 against him with a 1.119 OPS. This will be Chamberlain's first career start against Detroit after having made five relief appearances against the Tigers.

Home, sweet homers (48-42) (54-37)

Yankees 2, Tigers 1

Sorry, Mr. Jackson

Needing just seven pitches to retire the Yankees in the fifth inning, Edwin Jackson showed why his last outing prior to his start in the series finale was of the All-Star variety. But even the sparkling defense behind him couldn't save him from two blemishes -- solo dingers to A-Rod and Mark Teixeira for the margin in the defeat.

Get the Job done

On Old-Timers' Day, the efforts of one of the youngest Yankees and one of the newest Yankees would complete the sweep. After allowing a one-out triple, Joba Chamberlain worked out of a jam to retire the Tigers in the fifth -- the highlight of his impressive start -- while Mark Teixeira's solo home run put the Bombers ahead.
