O's eager to give Meredith a chance

When they resume their three-game series with the Yankees on Tuesday night, the Orioles may have the services of Cla Meredith, the right-handed reliever they acquired from the Padres in exchange for Oscar Salazar on Sunday. Whether Meredith appears out of the bullpen or not, Rich Hill will take the ball at 7:05 ET.

Rich Hill

  • #51 LHP
  • (3-2) 7.22 ERA 43 SO
Hill ended the first half of his season on a positive note, scattering seven hits across six innings and giving up only two runs against the Blue Jays. The lefty received a no-decision in a game the Orioles eventually won, 4-3, in 12 innings. It was good timing -- Hill had surrendered at least six earned runs in each of his previous three starts. This marks Hill's first career start against the Yankees.

Yanks think Mitre has ability to stick

Another setback for Chien-Ming Wang means the Yankees will need to rely on a regular fifth starter for an extended period of time, and they believe Sergio Mitre can fill the role. On Tuesday night at 7:05 ET, Mitre will make his first Major League start since 2007, hoping to lead the Yankees to their 18th win in 23 games.

Yankees probable pitcher

Sergio Mitre

  • #45 RHP
  • (0-0) -.-- ERA 0 SO
The Yankees will call up Mitre from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start on Tuesday against the Orioles in what could prove to be an extended audition for the spot. The right-hander has compiled a record of 10-23 in five big league seasons for the Cubs and Marlins, and he's 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA at Triple-A this year. Yankees skipper Joe Girardi managed Mitre on the Marlins in 2005 and remembers him as a strike thrower who gets ground balls when he is right and has a "bulldog attitude."

Yanks like their new view (41-52) (56-37)

Yankees 6, Orioles 4

Hill provides little

Rich Hill's season of unfulfilled expectations continued Tuesday, when the Yankees chased him with no outs in the fourth inning after a two-run homer. A two-run single by Melvin Mora kept the O's close, but the loss was Baltimore's 24th in its past 26 road games vs. AL East foes.

First place alone

A fifth straight win wasn't all the Yankees had to celebrate Tuesday. Sergio Mitre contained the O's into the sixth inning in his first start since 2007, and the rest of the Yanks took it from there to grab sole possession of first place in the AL East for the first time since June 8.
