Jerry Manuel had been hopeful that Gary Sheffield could be back on Tuesday, but after Monday's game, Manuel indicated that the Mets will likely have to wait some more.

Mets probable pitcher

Oliver Perez

  • #46 LHP
  • (2-2) 7.99 ERA 28 SO
Given to dramatic swings in performance, Perez produced a middle-of-the-road start in his most recent appearance Thursday in Atlanta. His six innings qualified as a quality start -- for those who accept that ultra-forgiving category. He allowed three runs, nine baserunners, four on walks, and bases-empty home runs to two successive batters. Two of the critical hits were produced by left-handed hitters. Those figures might have resulted in a victory, but the Mets scored three, so they resulted in Perez's third no-decision in seven starts. Now he faces an opponent that has troubled him over the years. Since the beginning of the 2006 season, Perez has started eight games against the Nationals, winning twice, losing four times, producing a 7.53 ERA and allowing 72 baserunners in 40 2/3 innings. Austin Kearns has a .345 average and four home runs in 29 career at-bats against Perez.

Hernandez giving the outfield a try

Anderson Hernandez has lost significant playing time at second base because of the emergence of Alberto Gonzalez, so Riggleman is looking for other ways to play him.

Nationals probable pitcher

John Lannan

  • #31 LHP
  • (6-7) 3.64 ERA 52 SO
Lannan continues to give the Nationals one good performance after another, but a lack of run support has led to his sub-.500 record. Again, Lannan threw a quality start last Thursday against the Cubs, hurling 6 2/3 innings and giving up three runs (two earned). But the Nationals could only spot him one run during that time, and the bullpen made sure that the Nats offense couldn't come back. Lannan has allowed three earned runs in 15 of his last 17 starts.

Oliver the place

Wildness marred Oliver Perez's performance, as he allowed six walks and a hit batsman in addition to four hits, for four runs in six innings. Meanwhile, the offense couldn't score off John Lannan, marking the fifth time in 13 games the Mets were shut out.
