No rest for the weary as A's hit the road

Oakland opens an eight-game road trip against the American League East's superpowers Thursday at Yankee Stadium. It'll then head to Boston for four games at Fenway Park.

Athletics probable pitcher

Vin Mazzaro

  • #54 RHP
  • (2-6) 4.09 ERA 33 SO
Mazzaro's last start didn't exactly go according to plan, as the rookie gave up eight runs on 10 hits in three-plus innings against the Angels. Four of the runs were unearned, though, as Oakland committed four errors -- one by Mazzaro. After winning his first two starts, Mazzaro is winless in his past seven, and he has a 6.75 ERA in his past four starts. The 22-year-old will hope for better luck -- and some better defense, too -- as he faces New York for the first time in his Yankee Stadium debut.

When the Yankees open a four-game series with the A's on Thursday night at 7:05 ET, CC Sabathia will not only look to extend his team's winning streak to six games. He'll try to duplicate the performance A.J. Burnett provided in Wednesday's win -- the result of a friendly competition among the Yankees' increasingly successful starting pitchers.

CC Sabathia

  • #52 LHP
  • (9-6) 3.66 ERA 99 SO
In his next outing, Sabathia will look for his ninth victory in 12 decisions as he draws an afternoon start against the Orioles. The lefty came away a winner on Saturday against the Tigers, hurling seven scoreless innings while scattering five hits, walking three and striking out four. He said he was too strong early in the outing but eventually settled in, outdueling Justin Verlander.

Tough homecoming

Pitching for the first time at Yankee Stadium, New Jersey native Vin Mazzaro didn't produce the desired results for the A's in the opener, struggling in his final two frames and giving up all six runs that the Yanks needed for the victory.

Seven in a row

Rain delayed the start of the opener vs. the A's, but there was no stopping the inevitable, as the Yanks' win streak hit seven games -- all at home -- thanks to CC Sabathia's gutty start and multi-RBI efforts from Jorge Posada and Mark Teixeira.
