LA Dodgers (62-38) at St. Louis (55-48)

The Dodgers are almost desperate for Clayton Kershaw to pitch deep into Wednesday night's start, which seems to be asking a lot of a 21-year-old, but Kershaw has been lights-out in his past eight starts.

  • #22 LHP
  • (8-5) 2.96 ERA 110 SO
Kershaw left a duel with Josh Johnson on even terms after six innings, although he never had a 1-2-3 inning and he allowed nine hits, but only two earned runs. He considered himself unlucky as much as anything, saying he didn't pitch much differently than he did in Florida when he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. It was Kershaw's fourth consecutive quality start and he hasn't lost since June 10.

Newly acquired Cardinals infielder Julio Lugo doesn't plan on just taking up a roster spot and earning his paycheck for his new team. "I want to win," he said.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Joel Pineiro

  • #35 RHP
  • (9-9) 2.95 ERA 54 SO
Pineiro finally got his record back to .500 with a six inning no-run performance on Friday night against the Phillies. It was the fourth straight win for the righty, who has been the Cardinals most consistent starter since day one but has been plagued by poor run support - the Cardinals have scored just 21 runs in his nine losses. The sinker-heavy pitcher has allowed just five earned runs in 29 innings in four July starts, all of which has has won. In eight home starts, Pineiro is 4-4 but has a 2.40 ERA.

Cards rally twice, cinch win in 15th (62-39) (56-48)

Cardinals 3, Dodgers 2 (15)

Gem goes to waste

The Dodgers blew two late one-run leads and wasted eight scoreless innings from starter Clayton Kershaw before dropping their fourth consecutive game. Closer Jonathan Broxton couldn't nail down the game in the ninth, spoiling another impressive outing from Kershaw.

Never say die

Nearly five hours and 15 innings later, Albert Pujols delivered a walk-off single to center field to give the Cardinals three consecutive wins over the Dodgers. St. Louis twice had to rally late, on Colby Rasmus' RBI single in the ninth and Ryan Ludwick's in the 11th.
