Pitching key for Yanks down stretch

While much has been made of the Yankees' 1-2 punch of 15-game winner CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte has given his club a chance to win.

Yankees probable pitcher

Andy Pettitte

  • #46 LHP
  • (10-6) 4.25 ERA 117 SO
Though his final line didn't come off as impressive, Pettitte pitched into the sixth inning against the Red Sox on Friday and turned in a better outing than the numbers indicated. He was nevertheless hit by the Red Sox for seven runs (five earned) on seven hits, walking two and striking out four. Pettitte last faced the Rangers on June 3 in New York, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings as he took a 4-2 loss. The lefty has reached double digits in wins in 14 of his 15 Major League seasons and with 188 career wins with New York is one shy of tying Lefty Gomez (189) for third in club history.

Seventh is heaven for booming Bombers (70-55) (79-47)

Yankees 9, Rangers 2

Slumbering giants

The good news: Chris Davis, David Murphy and Josh Hamilton combined for six hits, two RBIs and two runs. The bad news: That was about all the offense the Rangers could muster against Andy Pettitte and the Yankees 'pen. Derek Holland ran into trouble early and late, allowing six runs.

Late bloomers

The Yankees waited until the seventh inning to collectively erupt at the plate, plating five runs to blow the game wide open. Jorge Posada homered in the second, his second long ball in as many games, to back a solid Andy Pettitte, who benefited from three double plays.
