D-backs to see Garland from other side

For the first five months of the season, the D-backs played alongside Jon Garland. On Thursday, and likely again next Tuesday, they will face off against him as he starts for the Dodgers in the series finale against Billy Buckner.

Buckner will be making his first start since being recalled Monday from Triple-A Reno. The right-hander will face former teammate Jon Garland, who was dealt to Los Angeles on Monday night. Buckner has appeared in 10 games and made seven starts for the D-backs this season. This is his third stint in the big leagues.

This four-game set against the D-backs has been anything but a cakewalk, and a large part of the Dodgers' struggles can be attributed to an absent offense.

Jon Garland

  • (8-11) 4.29 ERA 83 SO
Jon Garland will be pitching as scheduled at Dodger Stadium, but instead of facing the Dodgers for the Diamondbacks, he'll be facing the Diamondbacks for the Dodgers after Monday night's trade. He is coming off seven shutout innings against the Astros. Garland is an innings-eater who has been especially effective recently because of his changeup.

Garland trumps old team in LA debut (61-74) (80-55)

Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 2

Settle for split

Facing a pitcher who was on their team just three days earlier, the D-backs were stifled by Jon Garland, who held his former teammates to five hits, including a Stephen Drew homer, over seven innings. Billy Buckner took the loss as the D-backs split the series.

New faces lead LA

Jon Garland was outstanding in his Dodgers debut, holding the team that traded him three days earlier to five hits over seven innings. He retired the final 14 batters he faced, getting offensive help from Ronnie Belliard (three RBIs) and Manny Ramirez (16th homer).
