Rasmus has top rookie competition

A visit to PNC Park these days means a good look at the National League Rookie of the Year race. When it's the Cardinals in town, it's an interesting glimpse at who could win it and who might have won it had things gone differently.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Mitchell Boggs

  • #41 RHP
  • (2-2) 4.57 ERA 35 SO
Boggs is coming off of one of his best starts of the year, and as a reward it appears that he'll get another one. His story tends to be pretty consistent from start to start: he gives up a lot of baserunners, runs up some high pitch counts but ultimately tends to avoid too much trouble. If he can improve his efficiency -- as he did to some extent in his last outing -- he can be pretty effective.

Bucs looking inside the numbers

The disparity between the Bucs' 35-30 record at PNC Park, where they will continue a weekend series against the Cardinals on Saturday, and the team's dismal 18-50 mark on the road is even too great for the statistics to explain.

Pirates probable pitcher

Ross Ohlendorf

  • #49 RHP
  • (11-9) 4.17 ERA 90 SO
One bases-loaded walk to the pitcher ultimately did Ohlendorf in during his last start, a loss to the Brewers. Not only did that walk push across a run, but it helped extend what was a three-run inning for Milwaukee. In all, Ohlendorf allowed four runs on five hits in six innings. Take away that one frame, and the right-hander was impressive. His efficiency was exceptional early, and his fastball velocity continues to sit in the mid-90s. Ohlendorf is 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA in three career starts against the Cardinals.

Albert to the rescue (81-56) (53-81)

Cardinals 2, Pirates 1 (10)

Pujols delivers

Albert Pujols and several other starters were out of the lineup, but Pujols made a pinch-hitting appearance in the 10th and delivered, hitting a decisive solo blast to left-center. Ryan Franklin survived a wild 10th to earn the save. Rookie Mitchell Boggs was strong over seven innings.

Series at a Glance

No 'W' for Ross

Ross Ohlendorf, a winner in his past five starts at home, gave the Pirates all they could want with one run allowed and a career-high 11 strikeouts over eight frames. But the Bucs couldn't get the bats going and fell in the 10th inning when Albert Pujols homered off Matt Capps.
