Back spasms hinder Young's return to LA

Delwyn Young, a Los Angeles native, will have plenty of fans in the stands when the Pirates face the Dodgers in the second game of a three-game series on Tuesday. But they may not actually get to see Young take the field.

Pirates probable pitcher

Zach Duke

  • #57 LHP
  • (10-14) 4.02 ERA 89 SO
For the first time this season, Duke's ERA has climbed over 4.00. It was the result of a rough outing last Tuesday against the Cubs, who chased Duke from the start after scoring eight times in four innings. Duke had some bad luck with ground balls finding holes. But he was also up in the strikezone way too often to have any sustained success. That outing was the second time in Duke's last three starts that the left-hander wasn't able to pitch past the fourth. Duke is 1-3 with a 7.53 ERA in six career starts against the Dodgers.

Ethier deep-sixes Bucs in 13th inning (55-88) (87-59)

Dodgers 5, Pirates 4 (13)

Tough loss to take

The Pirates' bullpen let one-run leads slip in the ninth and 13th innings as Andre Ethier's two-run shot finished off the Bucs. It spoiled Zach Duke's sterling effort: The lefty allowed just two runs on four hits in 7 1/3 innings and hit an RBI single in a three-run third.

Call him Mr. Walk-off

Andre Ethier did it again: The outfielder slugged a two-run homer in the 13th -- his sixth walk-off hit of the season -- to power the Dodgers, who increased their lead in the NL West to five games. Matt Kemp's single in the ninth scored Ethier to send the game to extras.
