Dice-K has big assignment vs. CC

Daisuke Matsuzaka's first two outings back from the DL have both been encouraging, and both resulted in victories. But the righty will get his best test yet when he faces the Yankees.

Red Sox probable pitcher

Daisuke Matsuzaka

  • #18 RHP
  • (3-5) 6.80 ERA 44 SO
Matsuzaka has given the Red Sox reason for optimism since coming off the disabled list, producing solid outings. After six innings of shutout baseball in his first game back against the Angels, Dice-K earned the win against the Orioles in his last outing, giving up eight hits and three runs over 5 1/3 innings. He stretched his pitch count to 110, walking one and striking out five. This will be the first time Matsuzaka has pitched against the Yankees this season. In six career starts against New York, Matsuzaka is 3-2 with a 6.35 ERA.

CC can take it easy the rest of way

This September, the eye-popping numbers are still there. But the short rest, the mental grind and the excessive innings totals that may or may not have affected CC Sabathia in October? That's all in the past.

Yankees probable pitcher

CC Sabathia

  • #52 LHP
  • (18-7) 3.31 ERA 186 SO
Hit by a fifth-inning line drive, Sabathia may have bruised, but once again, he could not be beaten. Backed by plenty of support, including a two-homer showing by Mark Teixeira, Sabathia moved into a tie for the Major League lead with his 18th win on Saturday at Safeco Field. He completed seven innings of work, holding the Mariners to an unearned run on four hits, walking two and striking out eight. The Yankees have won each of his last 10 starts.

Dice-K outdueled

One pitch from Daisuke Matsuzaka was the difference in the ballgame, which was a shame, because the righty matched CC Sabathia pitch-for-pitch until Robinson Cano's homer in the sixth. Boston was only able to produce one hit off Sabathia.

One away

CC Sabathia threw a brilliant one-hit performance against the Red Sox for his 19th victory, helping the Yanks lower their magic number to clinch the AL East to one. Robinson Cano's homer was the only run the Bombers needed.
