Lerew tasked with taming the Yankees

Nicknamed "Lash" after famed whipcracker Lash LaRue, right-hander Anthony Lerew will take on the task of taming the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.

Royals probable pitcher

Anthony Lerew

  • #54 RHP
  • (0-1) 3.86 ERA 2 SO
Lerew made his first start for the Royals on Thursday night against the Red Sox and made a pretty good showing. He gave up four runs in his 4 2/3 innings, but just two were earned because two errors hurt him. This was his first Major League start since 2007, when he was with the Braves. He spent the summer with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and had a splendid finish as he went 8-1 with a 2.01 ERA in his last 11 starts, including the playoffs. Manager Trey Hillman was impressed with Lerew's changeup and said he wasn't fearful of throwing it to right-handed hitters and that he worked both sides of the plate.

Bruney basks in emotional moment

Moments after navigating through the top of Boston's batting order en route to 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief, Brian Bruney walked off the Yankee Stadium mound to the type of standing ovation usually reserved for a dominant starting pitcher. The tears began flowing.

Yankees probable pitcher

A.J. Burnett

  • #34 RHP
  • (12-9) 4.19 ERA 184 SO
Burnett put together his second good start in a row against the Angels, giving the Yankees reason for confidence leading into the postseason. Burnett logged his 12th win by limiting the Angels to two runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out 11 -- one shy of his season high. Burnett is 2-1 with a 4.65 ERA this month. He has not faced Kansas City in 2009.

KC burned by Yanks

Starter Anthony Lerew went six-plus innings, his fine effort marred merely by a pair of solo home runs. But reliever Kyle Farnsworth, facing his former club, was unable to contain New York in the ninth inning, and the Royals were left stunned on the verge of notching their first victory at the new Yankee Stadium.

Yanks clean up spill

A decisive throwing error by Phil Coke in the seventh inning put a stain on A.J. Burnett's effort, in which he fanned eight over a 108-pitch tune-up -- but the Yankees roared back against KC in the ninth, perhaps amped up for the playoffs, and got their 15th walk-off hit of the season when Juan Miranda's single plated Eric Hinske.
