Mets fine with Evans, despite quiet year

Nick Evans hasn't seen as much time as he'd like for the Mets this season, but the team hopes that he has learned from his experiences in the Major Leagues regardless of that.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (10-12) 5.08 ERA 105 SO
It was another inconsistent outing from Pelfrey, who labored through six innings in a 5-2 loss to the Braves. Pelfrey allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits, with three of those runs coming in the second. Pelfrey is 1-2 with a 4.12 ERA in three starts this season versus the Nationals. One of those losses came in his lone outing at Nationals Park, where he gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings back on July 22. Pelfrey's had the most trouble with Elijah Dukes (6-for-9, HR) and Josh Willingham (7-for-17, 2 HR) while limiting Adam Dunn to three hits in 15 career at-bats against him.

MacDougal gets vote of confidence

A day after struggling against the Braves, closer Mike MacDougal received a pep talk from his manager and bounced back right away against the Mets, getting the save on Monday night.

Nationals probable pitcher

J.D. Martin

  • #60 RHP
  • (5-4) 4.71 ERA 35 SO
Martin started for the Nationals on Thursday and wasn't effective, allowing four runs in the first inning. It didn't help that he didn't have much of a breaking ball. Matt Kemp highlighted the scoring with a three-run homer. Martin allowed five runs in three innings.

Dukes a hazard to Mets in ninth (67-91) (54-103)

Nationals 4, Mets 3

Tough luck for Pelf

The Mets had victory in their grasp on Tuesday night, but they couldn't quite finish the job. After loading the bases with nobody out in the eighth and being held off the scoreboard, costly errors by Anderson Hernandez and Luis Castillo put a damper on Mike Pelfrey's final start of the season.

Nats pull it out

The Nationals took advantage of some breaks on Tuesday, but also created their own luck. Two Mets errors allowed the go-ahead run to score in the eighth inning, and then Elijah Dukes made a sensational catch at the wall to rob David Wright of a game-tying hit to end the game.
