Cold weather forced Game 3 of the National League Division Series to be pushed back until Sunday and led the Phillies to decide to start J.A. Happ instead of Pedro Martinez.

The Game 3 start that was originally supposed to go to Pedro Martinez is now Happ's, after the originally scheduled game for Saturday was bumped back to Sunday due to wintry conditions in Colorado. Happ, who will be making his first postseason start, was struck on the left leg with a line drive during a seventh-inning relief appearance during Game 2 on Thursday. The rookie left-hander threw just four pitches during the outing and has since said that his leg isn't bothering him. One of the leading candidates to be named the National League's Rookie of the Year, Happ went 10-4 with a 2.99 ERA in the 23 starts that he made this year. He tossed a four-hit shutout against the Rockies on Aug. 5 at Citizens Bank Park.

While the Phillies were being tight-lipped about their Game 3 starter, the Rockies had no such conundrum choosing Jason Hammel to take the mound when the series shifts to Coors Field on Sunday.

Rockies probable pitcher

Jason Hammel

  • #46 RHP

Hammel battled inconsistency early in the season but turned into a threat to win against high-quality lineups when he decided to eliminate a sinker and go with his four-seam fastball. The sinker was a good idea, considering that balls hit in the air at Coors Field can be dangerous. However, he didn't control it as well as the four-seamer, so he went with what was working for him. Of late, Hammel has been efficient in early innings. That was the improvement he needed to make to last longer in games. There is one red flag, though, as the Rockies head into Game 3. he was 3-3 with a 5.63 ERA in 16 regular-season starts at Coors Field, as opposed to 7-5, 3.13 on the road. Nonetheless, his strong second-half performance led manager Jim Tracy to pick him over Jason Marquis for the start.

Champs stave off comeback kids (2-1) (1-2)

Phillies 6, Rockies 5

Phillies forge ahead

The Phillies put themselves a win away from a return trip to the NL Championship Series after pulling ahead for good on Ryan Howard's sacrifice fly in the ninth. Chase Utley homered, Howard and Carlos Ruiz each drove in two runs, and Brad Lidge survived a two-walk ninth to get the save.

Rox on the brink

Carlos Gonzalez scored the game-tying run three times in a game played under record-tying cold temperatures, but the Phillies put Colorado on the brink of elimination. Gonzalez, who finished a triple shy of a cycle, was stranded on second as the tying run in the ninth.
