While Martinez might not be the same dominant pitcher that won three Cy Young Awards, he still draws plenty of respect from opponents and should do so Game 2 of the National League Championship Series on Friday.

Pedro Martinez

Martinez will be making his first postseason appearance since beating the Cardinals in Game 3 of the 2004 World Series. The 37-year-old right-hander, who joined the Phillies in August, has pitched just seven innings since Sept. 13. But after watching the veteran hurler complete a simulated game on Tuesday, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel once again reiterated that he's comfortable putting him out there as a starter. Martinez has gone 3-5 with a 4.02 ERA in nine career starts against the Dodgers. This is his first appearance against them since 2006. In 13 career playoff appearances, the three-time Cy Young Award winner has gone 6-2 with a 3.40 ERA.

It's been a long arduous journey for Vicente Padilla to get to where he is now. But in a funny twist of fate, the biggest start of his career -- in Friday's Game 2 of the NLCS -- will somewhat take him back to the beginning.

Dodgers probable pitcher

Vicente Padilla

  • #44 RHP
  • (0-0) -.-- ERA 0 SO
Vicente Padilla, a former Phillie, has resurrected his career in a big way after being released by the Rangers. He's unbeaten as a Dodger with four regular-season wins and the first-round clincher in St. Louis, when he threw seven scoreless innings and looked perfectly capable of finishing it up. Padilla had a dicey reputation with the Rangers as headhunter, but has been a model citizen with the Dodgers, impressive enough against the Cardinals to get moved up in the rotation. His teammates watch a sinking fastball that stays around 94 mph and can't believe he was released. He's faced the Phillies only once, allowing seven runs in a six-inning start in 2008. He's had plenty of experience at Citizens Bank Park, going 10-11 with a 4.98 ERA in his last two years with the Phillies after going 15-15 with a 2.97 ERA at Veterans Stadium.

Blue skies: Andre giant for Dodgers (1-1) (1-1)

Dodgers 2, Phillies 1

Settling for split

Pedro Martinez, who hadn't pitched in 26 days, looked like the Pedro of old and Ryan Howard homered for his record-tying sixth RBI in six playoff games. But Chase Utley's throwing error let the tying run score, and the Phillies couldn't hold on.

Walk of fame

Andre Ethier's patience at the plate resulted in a walk with the bags full in the eighth as the Boys in Blue clawed back to even in the NLCS with a huge win at Dodger Stadium. Juan Pierre came around to score on a throwing error to tie it for L.A.
