Kuroda perseveres to get Game 3 nod

It's been quite the season for Hiroki Kuroda. But now that the right-hander is healthy again, the Dodgers hope he can continue his success against a tough Philadelphia lineup in Game 3 of the NCLS on Sunday.

Hiroki Kuroda passed a final exam Tuesday, proving to Joe Torre and Rick Honeycutt that the herniated disk in his neck was healed enough to take the ball after being left off the roster for the first round against the Cardinals. While it will be almost three weeks since Kuroda pitched in a Major League game, management believes he's enough of a gamer to give him the first start in a hostile Citizens Bank Park. That conclusion was reached based in large part on how clutch Kuroda was in last year's playoffs, having been the only Dodgers starter to beat the Phillies. In his only start against them this year, he threw six scoreless innings in a no-decision. In three regular-season starts against them he's allowed only two earned runs in 19 innings. It's been a nightmarish season for the Opening Day starter, from a strained oblique muscle to the line drive he took off his head to the herniated disk, but all will be forgotten if he can duplicate last October's success.

The Phillies broke serve while utilizing Cole Hamels and Pedro Martinez in the first two games of this year's NLCS. Now with home-field advantage, they'll return to Philadelphia and have the benefit of handing the ball to their ace, Cliff Lee.

Phillies probable pitcher

Cliff Lee

  • #34 LHP

Lee has shown he is more than ready to pitch in the postseason. He looked dominant in Games 1 and 4 of the National League Division Series against the Colorado Rockies. He allowed one run and six hits in a complete-game 5-1 victory over the Rockies in Game 1 at Citizens Bank Park. He allowed just one earned run in 7 1/3 innings in a dramatic 5-4 comeback victory in Game 4 at Coors Field. Lee scuffled a bit late in the regular season, but it appears the postseason has energized him. He seems to want to make the most of the moment. The Cleveland Indians left him off their 2007 postseason roster, which is something he hasn't forgotten. He won the American League Cy Young last season before the Indians traded him and outfielder Ben Francisco to the Phillies on July 29 for prospects Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson and Jason Donald.

LA chilled out

Hiroki Kuroda became the 13th Dodgers starting pitcher to last less than two innings in a postseason game, and L.A. couldn't recover on a cold night in Philadelphia. The Dodgers have gone 19 straight innings without an extra-base hit.

Perfect-Lee done

Cliff Lee tossed eight superb innings and got more than enough backing early as Ryan Howard hit a two-run triple for a record seven straight playoff games with an RBI. Jayson Werth and Shane Victorino homered in the rout at Citizens Bank Park.
