Big games bring out the best in Pettitte

Andy Pettitte is not the type of pitcher the Angels want to face heading into Game 3 of the ALCS on Monday evening. With his ALDS-clinching win over the Twins, Pettitte moved into a tie with John Smoltz for the most playoff victories in Major League history.

Pettitte continued to pad his long and illustrious postseason resume with another quality start in Game 3 of the ALDS against the Twins, logging the victory with 6 1/3 innings of one-run, three-hit ball as the Yankees swept Minnesota and advanced to face the Angels. Pettitte walked one and struck out seven in what was the Metrodome's closing act for baseball. Pettitte had some trouble with the Angels in 2009, going 0-2 with a 7.88 ERA in three starts. In 16 innings on May 1, July 11 and Sept. 21, Pettitte allowed 21 hits and 14 runs, walking eight and striking out six. Baseball's all-time leader in postseason innings pitched with 224 2/3, Pettitte is 15-9 with a 3.89 ERA in 36 playoff games and 6-1 with a 3.92 ERA in nine ALCS starts.

Weaver in control at home for Game 3

No one will be more comfortable returning to Southern California than Angels right-hander Jered Weaver, who will get the starting nod in Game 3 at 1:13 p.m. PT Monday at Angel Stadium.

Weaver was in prime form in turning away the Red Sox at Angel Stadium in Game 2 of the ALDS, holding them to two hits and one earned run across 7 1/3 innings in his third career playoff outing and second start.

The two hits, which came in the fourth inning, were the fewert ever yielded in a postseason game by an Angels pitcher who worked at least seven innings.

Weaver was bringing the heat, getting his fastball in the 91-94 mph range, and he put it in all the right places, finishing with seven strikeouts while walking two men.

The cross-firing right-hander has responded all season to the electricity at Angel Stadium. He was 9-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 17 starts at home compared to 7-5, 4.78 on the road in 16 trips to the post.

With increased stamina and strength, Weaver established career highs in innings (211), strikeouts (174), complete games (four) and shutouts (two) while holding hitters to a .246 batting average.

Weaver was 1-1 in three appearances against the Yankees, getting a loss and a no-decision with a 6.08 ERA in two outings at the new Yankee Stadium. He beat the Yanks at home on July 11, giving up four earned runs in six innings.

He's 4-2 with a 5.88 ERA in seven career starts against New York.

Angels 5, Yankees 4 (11)

This time, no dice

Hoping to win back-to-back extra-inning games vs. the Angels, the Yanks were denied when Jeff Mathis hit a walk-off double in the 11th, overshadowing the four-homer show put on by the Bombers and giving New York its first loss of the 2009 playoffs.
