With the Dodgers' season on the line, Vicente Padilla will start Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on Wednesday, as manager Joe Torre sent 21-year-old left-hander Clayton Kershaw to the bullpen for Game 4 as a long reliever.

Manager Joe Torre tends to go with the hot hand, so he selected Vicente Padilla to start what has turned into a do-or-die assignment with the Dodgers facing elimination. Padilla, released by Texas in August, is as close as the Dodgers have to an ace in October. When he starts, the club expects to be in the game. He is coming off a rousing no-decision duel with Pedro Martinez against his former club, allowing only one run over 7 1/3 innings. And that followed seven scoreless innings in the NL Division Series clincher in St. Louis. In fact, Padilla hasn't lost since signing with the Dodgers. He's handled pressure starts, pitched well on the road and impressed the staff with a devastating hard sinker that he throws consistently for strikes.

Phils confident Hamels can clinch NLCS

Cole Hamels has had an up-and-down season, but six months of struggles will be forgotten with a strong outing against the Dodgers in Game 5 on Wednesday, when the Phils can become the first team since the 1995-96 Braves to win consecutive NL titles.

Last year's NLCS and World Series MVP has not been sharp this postseason, allowing eight earned runs in 10 1/3 innings (6.97 ERA). Hamels pitched well in Los Angeles in Game 1 before encountering trouble in the fifth. He would earn the win, but he allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. With a victory Wednesday, Hamels will seal the Phillies' second consecutive NL pennant.

Phinishing touch (1-4) (4-1)

Phillies 10, Dodgers 4

An abrupt ending

For the second consecutive October, the Dodgers' dreams of a spot in the World Series ended at the hands of the Phillies. Andre Ethier and James Loney went deep in the raucous early going, but Los Angeles ran out of steam and was denied a trip back home for a Game 6.
