Pettitte tries to one-up the Phillies

Four years later, Andy Pettitte will again start a World Series game, taking the mound for Game 3 of the Fall Classic in Philadelphia on Saturday night.

  • #46 LHP
  • (0-0) -.-- ERA 0 SO
As much as ever this season, Pettitte is in a groove. In all three of his postseason outings, he has pitched 6 1/3 innings, never allowing more than three runs or fewer than one. Most importantly for Pettitte, the control problems that have plagued him at times this season have vanished -- over his three postseason outings, he has struck out 15 batters and walked just three.

In his last start, Game 6 of the American League Championship Series against the Angels, Pettitte allowed one run on seven hits, striking out six and becoming baseball's all-time postseason wins leader.

Though Pettitte's low-velocity offerings don't strike quite the same fear in Philadelphia's lefty sluggers as CC Sabathia's pitches do, Pettitte has handled that group just fine. Ryan Howard is just 1-for-9 in his career off Pettitte, who has been markedly better on the road this season than at home. Chase Utley is 1-for-7 off him and Raul Ibanez, the best of the bunch, is 6-for-21.

Pettitte has not pitched at Citizens Bank Park since 2006, but he held the Phillies to four runs over seven innings in an Interleague no-decision at Yankee Stadium in May. He has a career 2-2 record with a 3.67 ERA in seven regular season starts against the Phillies. In 11 career World Series starts, Pettitte is 3-4 with a 3.82 ERA.

Trying to regain touch is Hamels' goal

Cole Hamels has struggled with his control and location since he suffered soreness in his left elbow during the spring. That begs the question whether he is completely healthy at this point in the playoffs.

Phillies probable pitcher

Cole Hamels

  • #35 LHP
  • (0-0) -.-- ERA 0 SO
Hamels is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three postseason starts. He has allowed 20 hits, 11 runs, two walks and six home runs in 14 1/3 innings. He has struck out 12 and opponents have hit .328 against him. Hamels is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees.

"I look at Hamels and I still feel like he's got the game in him," Manuel said. "Baseball is a funny game. I say that all the time. He's very capable of throwing a good game. He was getting hit around a little bit the other night and he didn't have the command that he usually has, but at the same time, he's the guy. He's very capable of throwing a shutout every time he goes out there."
