All year, A.J. Burnett has talked about how he feeds off CC Sabathia, how his goal is to match the Yankees' ace in every way he can. So when Sabathia came back on short rest to pitch Game 4 of the World Series at Citizens Bank Park, thus opening the door for Burnett to do the same in Game 5, the right-hander was not about to say no.

After a rocky first three innings in Game 2 in which he threw 61 pitches, Burnett settled down in his first World Series start and was near unhittable, outdueling Phillies starter Pedro Martinez as the Yankees won, 3-1, to even the Classic at a game apiece. Burnett struck out nine and walked two while turning in his third quality start in four postseason outings. He is 1-0 with a 3.55 ERA in those contests, but take out one bad first inning against the Angels and his ERA is a sterling 2.13.

While fans will debate the decision not to start Cliff Lee in Game 4 of the World Series, the Phillies can only focus on the optimism that remains via the fact that with their season on the line, a fully rested Lee will take the mound Monday night in a must-win Game 5.
Phillies probable pitcher
Cliff Lee
- #34 LHP
- (1-0) 0.00 ERA 10 SO
The Phillies pin their World Series championship hopes on left-hander Cliff Lee, who has been incredible this postseason. He is 3-0 with a 0.54 ERA in four postseason starts. That is the best ERA of any pitcher in a single postseason who has pitched 30 or more innings. It is the seventh-best single postseason ERA of all time. Lee threw a complete game against the Yankees in Game 1. He allowed no earned runs and no walks and struck out 10 to pick up the 6-1 victory. They don't need perfection, but they need something close from him if the Phillies are going to extend the Series and send it back to New York for Game 6 on Wednesday.

Phillies 8, Yankees 6
Tasked with pitching the Yankees to a Series-clinching Game 5 win, A.J. Burnett struggled mightily and left in the third inning. Alex Rodriguez doubled twice and plated three runs, but the Yankees must now head home to finish off their 27th World Series championship.

The Phillies rode Chase Utley's record-tying fourth and fifth homers of the World Series and another sparkling start by Cliff Lee to force the Fall Classic back to the Bronx down, 3-2. Utley's homer output has equaled Reggie Jackson's historic display in 1977 for the Yankees.
