TOR@ATL: Beachy fans six over five innings of work

Brandon Beachy and Jason Hammel are both looking to overcome speed bumps and keep their strong 2012 seasons on track.

Beachy hasn't started since June 8, as Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez gave the Major League ERA leader three extra days of rest because of a sore right elbow.

"Can't hurt," Beachy said. "I want to be out there as often as I can, but I'm not going to complain about getting a couple extra days of rest."

In Beachy's last start, he allowed two runs on three hits and a season-high five walks in five innings against the Blue Jays.

Beachy has said he feels fine, the same thing Hammel has been saying about a sore right knee that forced him to miss a start early in May.

Although Hammel has reported improvement with each successive start, he's yet to make it out of the seventh inning since the injury became an issue.

Hammel has remade himself this season, throwing more sliders and two-seam fastballs to post a 6-2 record and 3.22 ERA. But his last start was one of his worst of the season, as Hammel allowed four runs on six hits in six innings against Philadelphia on Sunday. Like Beachy, Hammel set a season-high with five walks in his last outing.

"These are human beings, they're not robots," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "You don't say this happened so this is going to happen again. This is why we play the game and people watch the game, it's that unknown. So many factors to figure in."

Orioles: Jones back on track
• Adam Jones has been on fire since snapping an 0-for-18 skid Saturday against Philadelphia.

The O's center fielder has 11 hits in his 22 at-bats since ending the streak, including two home runs and four RBIs.

• The Orioles hit into four double plays on Friday, pushing their Major League-leading total to 72.

Braves: Bourn on a tear
• Michael Bourn extended his hit streak to 14 games with an RBI single in the sixth inning on Friday.

During that streak, Bourn is hitting .390 with five doubles. two homers and six RBIs.

• Kris Medlen returned to the Majors on Friday and fired two shutout innings of relief. Medlen was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on May 29.

Worth noting
• Jason Heyward is 5-for-5 in his career against Hammel.
