CIN@SF: Bumgarner shuts down Reds with one-hitter

Less than 12 hours after Tuesday's game was finally wrapped up following an 85-minute rain delay, the Giants and Nationals will meet for one of the season's earliest games, an 11:05 a.m. ET Fourth of July start on Wednesday.

The early start time would seemingly present a problem for the visiting Giants, who will be seeing the game's first pitch just after 8 a.m. PT, but it appears they're taking the unusual circumstance in stride.

"I'm a morning guy," Pablo Sandoval said.

"For me, personally, I think it's fun," right-hander Sergio Romo said. "You get to wake up and bam, here you are, game's on."

The team flew out to D.C. a day early, and manager Bruce Bochy emptied his bench on Tuesday and canceled morning batting practice on Wednesday, trying to level the playing field for the Giants and starter Madison Bumgarner.

Even after a normal night's sleep, Bumgarner would be hard pressed to duplicate the one-hit shutout he threw Thursday against the Reds.

Bumgarner walked only two while striking out eight to record his first complete game of the season.

"It's nice to finally get a complete game," Bumgarner said afterwards. "I had a little luck on my side, but I'll take it."

While Bumgarner will be following his best start of the year, Nationals starter Edwin Jackson will be looking to rebound from his worst.

Jackson allowed eight runs on 10 hits his last time out, surviving only three innings against the Rockies.

"I did a terrible job of keeping the ball down in the zone and getting ahead," Jackson said. "When the bullpen has to come on in the fourth inning, that's never good. I didn't get the deal closed."

Giants: Crawford coming alive
Shortstop Brandon Crawford is hitting .409 (9-for-22) in his last nine games.

Crawford was hitting just .224 prior to that stretch.

• With Gregor Blanco's first-inning stolen base, the Giants have now been successful on 29 of their last 33 attempts. San Francisco is third in the Majors with 66 stolen bases in 2012.

Nationals: Desmond continues to dominate
Ian Desmond is 14-for-33 (.424) with three home runs, a triple, seven doubles and nine RBIs in his last eight games.

Desmond, selected to his first All-Star team on Sunday, is hitting .280 with a career-high 14 home runs this season.

• After opening his career with 72 consecutive games without a steal, Steve Lombardozzi stole his second base in as many games on Tuesday.

Worth noting
• Adam LaRoche is 1-for-9 with five strikeouts in his career against Bumgarner.
