First baseman Todd Helton, on the disabled list with a sore right hip, went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk on Friday night with the Rockies rookie league affiliate in Grand Junction. Helton is scheduled to play again on Saturday and has designs to return to the Rockies early next week. Padres: Wrist could keep Maybin out all weekend.
Center fielder Cameron Maybin wasn't in the starting lineup for the third consecutive game on Friday as he deals with a nagging right wrist injury. Black thinks there's a chance Maybin will sit out the entire weekend series against the Rockies. "You might not see him swing a bat for a few days," Black said. "He's a little better [Friday], but it will probably be a couple of days until you see him." Maybin is hitting .221 with four homers and 26 RBIs. Worth noting
Left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez, acquired Friday from the Royals in a trade for Jeremy Guthrie, will start Monday at Arizona. The Padres beat the Rockies, 9-5, in the first game of the series on Friday to snap the Rockies streak of victories in three consecutive series openers. Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal hit his fifth homer of the season, and his first since July 4. Grandal's first two career hits -- on June 30 against the Rockies -- were home runs.
