NYY@CLE: CC fans nine in first start off the DL

The Yankees will be looking to build off their momentum from a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday when they conclude a three-game set a Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.

Of New York's 30 remaining games, 24 are against division rivals, including a combined 13 against the Rays and Orioles. Both of those teams are still very alive in the playoff chase, and Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he wouldn't have it any other way.

"They're more meaningful, the competition is great," Girardi said. "There's great competition in not only our division, but all of the American League. That's what we play for, the thrill of the competition."

With ace CC Sabathia on the mound, the Yankees have to like their odds Wednesday.

Sabathia's last start was his first since coming off the disabled list with left elbow inflammation. In a win against the Indians, he gave up just one run in 7 1/3 innings, allowing a homer and three other hits, a walk and nine strikeouts.

Sabathia will be up against J.A. Happ. Happ's done well in his last two starts, allowing one run in each outing while winning one and earning a no-decision in the other.

Against the Tigers his last time out, the lefty gave up the only run on four hits and three walks in 7 1/3 innings of work, with seven strikeouts.

Blue Jays: Bautista to miss remainder of season
Toronto slugger Jose Bautista will miss the remainder of the season after being examined by hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham on Monday.

The plan is for Bautista to have left wrist surgery, and the outfielder is likely to be ready for Spring Training in February.

Bautista re-injured the wrist Saturday, less than two days after coming off the disabled list with inflammation in the same wrist. He played in 92 games for the Blue Jays, batting .241 with 27 homers and 65 RBIs.

Yankees: Teixeira to miss at least a week
New York first baseman Mark Teixeira had to leave Monday's matchup with the Blue Jays in the fourth inning and was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital for an MRI, which revealed the slugger has a Grade 1 left calf strain.

The injury rules Teixeira out for at least a week for the division-leading Yankees.

"It could be as little as a week, it could be two weeks," Teixeira said. "I don't really know. I just know that the MRI showed a strain."

Teixeira, who was batting .255 with 23 homers and 81 RBIs on the season, won't go on the disabled list thanks to rosters expanding Sept. 1. Nick Swisher, Eric Chavez, Casey McGehee and Steve Pearce all figure to replace Teixeira at first until he returns.

Worth noting
• Pitcher Marcus Stroman, one of the Blue Jays' top Draft picks in 2012, was suspended 50 games for using a banned substance, the stimulant methylhexaneamine.

• A day after acquiring him from the Astros, the Yankees put Pearce in the lineup Tuesday, hitting cleanup as a designated hitter. He went 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk, run and strikeout.
