West hoping to take down Giants

Sean West beat his idol, Randy Johnson, the first time he faced the Giants, back on June 8. He hopes to fare as well on Monday, this time against Matt Cain, when the Marlins open a three-game set in San Francisco.

West took a no-decision in his last start despite not having his best stuff as the Nationals tagged him for five runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. The tall left-hander struggled from the start and had trouble with Washington's best hitters as Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman combined to go 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs. West will try to repeat his success against the Giants in his next start. The 23-year-old picked up his first Major League win against San Francisco when he threw eight shutout innings of two-hit ball on June 8.

All-Star hopeful Sandoval to make case

Pablo Sandoval has less than a week to improve his candidacy for the All-Star Game, and being in the lineup can only help his cause. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said his third baseman would likely be able to start Monday's game after badly bruising his right knee Saturday.

    Giants probable pitcher

    Matt Cain

    • #18 RHP
    • (9-2) 2.48 ERA 88 SO
Cain is winless in his last three starts, though he has pitched more than capably over that stretch. He received no decision while allowing one run and three hits in eight innings against Texas on June 20, lost at Milwaukee on June 26 while yielding five runs in seven innings and took another no-decision at St. Louis in his last start despite surrendering just one run in seven innings. In Cain's 16 starts, he has been unable to last at least six innings only once, and that was a rain-shortened complete game at Washington on June 4.

Sandoval slams Giants past Marlins (43-41) (45-37)

    Giants 5, Marlins 4

    Florida falls short

Sean West kept the Giants in check for five of his six frames, but in the fifth inning, he gave up a grand slam that ultimately proved too much for the Marlins to overcome. Florida sent seven men to the plate in the ninth to cut the deficit to one run before succumbing.

    Panda power

All-Star Matt Cain became the second National Leaguer to reach 10 victories, and he got most of his support from Pablo Sandoval. The Kung Fu Panda, hoping to also become an All-Star as the winner of the Final Vote, slugged his first career grand slam.
