Cubs sophomore right-hander Randy Wells comes off a no-decision against the Rockies that easily could have been a win. He gave up one run on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings, posting his fifth quality start. He has held the opposition to one run or fewer in three of his eight games.
He also established a career high by uncorking 116 pitches against the Rockies. Even though he didn't get a decision, his team rallied for the win, and he said that gave him all the satisfaction he needed.
"As long as we win, I don't care what the shakedown is," Wells said. "I felt I threw the ball pretty good, gave up a couple hits. I attacked the hitters, and you hope they put the ball on the ground. All in all, it's a good night."
On the Rangers' side, left-hander Derek Holland will get the ball after winning both of his starts since being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. In his last outing on Monday against the Angels, Holland went 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
He didn't give up a run until the fifth inning, running his season-opening scoreless-innings streak to 10.
"I'm just keeping the same confidence level, keep attacking the zone and keep using my fastball more," Holland said. "The main thing is to keep the ball down and watch the offense do the work and the defense make plays behind me."
Cubs: Howry in the mix
The Cubs signed right-handed reliever Bob Howry to a big league contract Friday and added him to the active roster, starting the veteran's second stint with the Cubs. Howry also pitched for Chicago from 2006-08. Howry, 36, went 17-17 with a 3.90 ERA and 14 saves in 234 appearances with the Cubs during his first stint. His 58 holds are fourth-most in franchise history, while his career-high 84 appearances in 2006 are tied for most on the Cubs' single-season list. ... Reliever Sean Marshall has two victories and a hold in his last three appearances. His 22 relief appearances is tied for fourth in the Majors.
Rangers: Team looking at catching help
The Rangers are looking for help behind the plate, and industry sources told MLB.com that Mets catcher -- and former Rangers backstop -- Rod Barajas is a possible target for the July 31 Trade Deadline, if the Mets are willing to move him. The Rangers like what they've gotten from Matt Treanor and Max Ramirez so far but are not completely satisfied with the tandem. The two catchers the team started the season with, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden, are in the Minor Leagues.
The Cubs have faced three left-handers in their last eight games and will face two more in Holland and C.J. Wilson to close out this series. Cubs batters are hitting .277 (109-for-394) off left-handed pitching this season. ... Friday was Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton's 29th birthday.

Extra pinch of lefties gives Cubs winning recipe
Tyler Colvin doubled and scored on fellow lefty Mike Fontenot's pinch-hit RBI single in the 10th, and lefty pinch-hitter Kosuke Fukudome scored an insurance run, as the Cubs held on to snap the Rangers' win streak.
