Ethier returns as Dodgers open with D-backs
By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com
The Dodgers can't wait to have Andre Ethier back in the lineup. The D-backs probably wouldn't mind if the slugger waited an extra day or series before returning from the disabled list.
Before Sunday's game, it was announced the slugger will return for Monday's series opener.
Here's why Ethier should have an impact this series: He's a .349 hitter with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs against the D-backs. Ethier, who completed a two-game Minor League rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday night in Memphis, is hitting .406 in six games against Arizona this year.
The outfielder was placed on the DL on May 15 after suffering a broken little finger on his right hand during batting practice.
It will be up to D-backs starter Rodrigo Lopez to keep Ethier in check on Monday. Lopez faced an uphill battle in his last outing opposite Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez at Coors Field and eventually left the game trailing, 4-0, after six and the D-backs went on to lose, 7-3.
The D-backs are 0-6 on their current road trip and riding a season-worst seven-game losing streak after the Giants topped them, 6-5, on Sunday.
"We created this mess, and we've got to get ourselves out of it," D-backs manager A.J. Hinch said.
The road will not get any easier. The D-backs dropped two out of three games against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium earlier this year.
"One thing to make perfectly clear is we're not victims here," Hinch said. "So I'm not going to accept any sort of sour faces around here."
D-backs: Reinforcements coming? Is pitching help on the way? Kris Benson, who is on the disabled list with a shoulder strain, allowed four runs on six hits in four innings at Triple-A Reno on Saturday. He will remain with the Aces and make another start. ... Chris Snyder's 235-game errorless streak is the third-longest streak in Major League history. He is 18 games from passing Mike Matheny for the NL record. Dodgers: Quite a comeback
Monday starter Chad Billingsley is the first Dodgers pitcher to win six games this year. He insists his turnaround after a bad finish last year and slow start this season is credited to a simplified approach and a focus on the fastball and curveball that got him to the Major Leagues. He went 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA in May, including a win in Phoenix. ... Rule 5 rookie Carlos Monasterios will get another turn in the rotation against the D-backs on Wednesday. Worth noting
The first pitch in the D-backs' opening game of the series against the Yankees on June 21 has been changed from 6:40 p.m. to 7:09 p.m. MST because the game will now be televised nationally on ESPN. ... The D-backs are nine wins short of becoming the second-fastest franchise to reach 1,000 wins since 1961. The Royals set the record with 1,000 wins in 11 seasons and 124 games.

Balk brings home bizarre win for Dodgers
D-backs reliever Esmerling Vasquez balked in Casey Blake with two outs in the ninth, as the Dodgers took a bizarre victory in which they tied the score in the eighth inning on two errors on the same ground ball.
