Perhaps the fate of the American League Central will be affected by the Dodgers' three-game set with Colorado this weekend. Thanks to a sweep of the Brewers earlier in the week, Los Angeles became a Wild Card contender and could hold onto Manny for a September push.
Not to mention the situation with Dodgers southpaw Ted Lilly, who was reportedly placed on waivers Friday and could be auditioning for new suitors in the series finale on Sunday.
On Saturday, Los Angeles will turn to right-hander Chad Billingsley, who will pitch with an extra day of rest to let his balky calf muscle recover.
"We just bought him a little time to help him," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said on Friday. "We'll see whether it bothers him or not tomorrow."
Billingsley said the injury bothers him while fielding, but that it's not a factor when he's pitching. Billingsley is yet to face the Rockies this season, but his 6.87 ERA at Coors Field is his highest mark at any National League stadium.
Jhoulys Chacin, who is putting together a serviceable rookie campaign this season, will take the rubber for Colorado on Saturday. Against Arizona on Sunday, Chacin tossed a career-high 7 2/3 innings, shutting out the D-backs while striking out nine.
"This kid, obviously, has a brilliant future," Colorado manager Jim Tracy said. "I'd have to say that if it's not the best game he's pitched since he came to the big leagues last year, it's really close to it."
Dodgers: Carroll may be playing with broken finger
Jamey Carroll, who is filling in for injured Rafael Furcal at shortstop, may be playing with a broken right index finger. "It doesn't matter if it is or not," Carroll said. "It looks broken, but you just deal with it. I don't think it affects me. It just looks funny."
Rockies: Beleaguered bullpen gets a boost
Colorado received a pair of new arms in the bullpen Friday, as southpaws Franklin Morales and Samuel Deduno joined the team. Tracy said Deduno, who made his big league debut on Friday, will be used as a long relief man.
The Rockies had two former players latch on to American League teams recently. Brad Hawpe, who was designated for assignment by Colorado last week, was signed by Tampa Bay and will work in the Minor Leagues for the time being. Reliever Randy Flores, also designated for assignment last week, has signed with the Twins. ... Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti couldn't discuss the Ramirez situation due to MLB tampering rules, but said he would like to hold onto his key players if Los Angeles stays alive in the playoff picture.

Rookie Chacin has his way with Dodgers
Rookie Jhoulys Chacin outdueled Chad Billingsley and held the Dodgers' Manny Ramirez-less starting lineup to four hits over seven innings. Todd Helton and Carlos Gonzalez homered for the Rockies.
