On Saturday, New York will send left-hander CC Sabathia to the mound. Chicago will counter with southpaw John Danks.
It is the right move at the right time for both teams.
The Yankees are tied with the Rays on top of the AL East standings, while the White Sox trail the first-place Twins by 3 1/2 games in the AL Central.
Those circumstances could change by Saturday night.
That's where Sabathia steps in. The big man is seeking his fifth straight win after firing six innings of scoreless, three-hit ball against Seattle in his last start. He did not walk a batter and struck out eight, before rain knocked him out of the game.
"It's an ace being an ace, and being extremely consistent and having a good feeling for what he's doing every time he goes out there," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "The consistency is unbelievable."
As for Danks, he is trying to end August without a loss, though he has only one win and three no-decisions in the month. The Texan is 4-1 since the All-Star break and holds a 2-1 career record against the Yanks.
"It's not going to get any easier," Danks said. "We just have to play good baseball these last five or six weeks and see where that takes us."
Yankees: Captain keeps making history
Derek Jeter has at least 10 home runs and 15 stolen bases in each of the past 15 seasons, the second-longest streak all-time to Barry Bonds (16), according to Elias. ... Of the club's 63 road games, 35 have been decided by three runs or fewer. The Yankees are 13-12 in one-run games. ... Girardi says he's not really paying attention to the Red Sox-Rays series. "If my focus is on that, then it's not here. ... Ultimately, I'd root that they both lost today." ... The Yankees are 7-1-1 in series against the AL Central this season.
White Sox: Bullpen takes another hit
The bullpen could use some real relief. Reliever Erick Threets is day to day with a sore elbow. X-rays were negative but he is the third reliever to go down in the last week. ... Paul Konerko is 17-for-36 in his past eight games. ... Manny Ramirez was awarded to the White Sox on a waiver claim earlier Friday, as confirmed to MLB.com by a baseball source.
The White Sox have used 86 different lineups this season. ... Don't expect Juan Pierre to stop running anytime soon. He has 50 stolen bases this season and joins Otis Nixon as the only players to have 50 steals with four different teams. ... The Yankees lead the season series, 3-1. ... The White Sox will celebrate Frank Thomas Day on Sunday. The game has been picked up nationally by TBS. ... Andy Pettitte threw 25 pitches off the bullpen mound at approximately 75 percent Friday. He had not thrown in 10 days, and it is unclear when he will return to the club.

Bombers' sluggers subdue South Siders
CC Sabathia won his 18th, but he owed much of it to his offense, as Nick Swisher, Marcus Thames (twice) and Eduardo Nunez homered for the Yanks, who evened the series despite three White Sox homers.
