For Gee, selected in the 21st round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Tuesday's assignment follows a 2009 season during which he was limited to nine Triple-A starts due to a right labrum tear.
Now, with New York ace Johan Santana sidelined because of a pectoral strain, Gee's moment has arrived. In 28 starts with Triple-A Buffalo, he went 13-8 with a 4.96 ERA and racked up a franchise-record 165 strikeouts that led the International League.
"This has been unbelievable, especially to end [the season] here," Gee said. "The main goal was just to go out this year and prove that I'm healthy again and that I can still pitch. I think I proved that."
On Tuesday, Maya can begin to prove why the Nationals signed him to a four-year contract on July 31. In two starts with Triple-A Syracuse, the 29-year-old Cuba native allowed two runs on eight hits and five walks with nine strikeouts across 10 1/3 innings.
Maya pitched for Cuba in the 2006 and '09 editions of the World Baseball Classic, posting a 0.87 ERA over six appearances.
"I'm really happy to be in the big leagues," Maya said. "It's a dream come true."
