Roberts, the O's longtime second baseman, has missed much of the season but is on fire lately. He's reached safely in 19 consecutive games, accumulating 11 runs, seven doubles, a home run, eight RBIs, eight walks and three stolen bases.
"If you've been going as long as he has, he understands himself and he trusts things," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "I don't want to use the word assume, but you see all the little things that he does and the way he is into the game mentally and understands what everybody is trying to do to him and what he has to do.
"It's nice to be able to put one thing aside and say, 'OK, we've got that covered.'"
As for A-Rod, the Yankees are being sure to ease in their slugging third baseman, who missed 14 games because of a strained left calf muscle, but his importance is undeniable and, as it turns out, historic.
Rodriguez has recorded at least 100 RBIs for the 14th season and 13th straight year, and according to the Elias Sports Bureau, it's the most 100-RBI seasons of any player in history and matches Lou Gehrig (1926-38) and Jimmie Foxx (1929-41) for most consecutive 100-RBI seasons in history.
Orioles: Bergesen finding consistency
Wednesday's O's starter, Brad Bergesen, has allowed three or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts and has worked at least seven innings in five of those outings. In two career starts against the Yankees (both in New York), Bergesen is 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA. ... Reliever Koji Uehara has posted a 1.44 ERA -- allowing four earned runs in 25 innings -- and 27 strikeouts in his last 22 appearances since July 9. Uehara notched his first Major League save on Aug. 21 against the Rangers. Uehara has not allowed any of the 13 runners he has inherited to score and has retired his first batter faced in 28 of 31 appearances.
Yankees: Nova gets another start
Ivan Nova, 23, will make his fourth Major League start on Wednesday and his first career start against the Orioles. He last pitched on Friday against the Blue Jays, making his first career start at Yankee Stadium. Nova allowed three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. ... Yankees relievers have combined to post a 1.54 ERA with 104 strikeouts and a .186 (81-for-436) opponents' batting average since July 26. They've allowed only one run in the club's last seven games, a span of 20 1/3 innings.
Since returning from the disabled list on July 22, Orioles reliever Mike Gonzalez has a 2.87 ERA in 18 games, with 17 strikeouts and six walks. ... Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner ranks fifth in the Majors with 40 stolen bases. He has become the seventh Yankees player in the last 70 years to collect 40 steals (also Rickey Henderson, Roberto Kelly, Mickey Rivers, Steve Sax, Alfonso Soriano and Snuffy Stirnweiss) and has been caught once in 16 attempts since the All-Star break.

At the buzzer ... Swish!
With the Yankees two outs away from a fourth straight loss and their first home sweep at the hands of the O's since 1986, Nick Swisher hit a walk-off homer off Koji Uehara, who suffered his first blown save of the season.
