This Day in Baseball History
February 12, 1942 > Minor League outfielder Gordon Houston becomes the first player from professional baseball to die during active duty in World War II. Houston had played with the Texarkana Liners of the East Texas League in 1940. Two former Major Leaguers, Elmer John Gideon and Harry O'Neill, will lose their lives during combat in 1944 and '45, respectively.
