This Day in Baseball History
April 1, 1996 > Longtime National League umpire John McSherry collapses near home plate and dies from a heart attack on Opening Day at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium. The 51-year-old McSherry, who struggled with weight problems for much of his career, had umpired in the N.L. for 26 seasons.
