Even though it out-hit the American League 11-4 in the first All-Star Game of 1961, the National League still had to rally in the bottom of the 10th to win. History was made in the second game, as rain stopped play after nine innings, making it the only All-Star Game tie.
1961: The Winds to Blame
The 1961 game at San Francisco's wind-swept Candlestick Park was another exciting extra-innings affair. The Nationals had a 3-2 lead in the ninth with Stu Miller of the Giants on the hill and the tying run on third. A sudden gust of wind knocked Miller from his set position on the mound, causing a balk which allowed the tying run to score. After the AL took a 4-3 lead in the 10th, the NL rallied for the victory with three straight hits from Hall-of-Fame outfielders. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente each singled to lead the NL to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory.
