Baseball Hall of Fame
First Week in February
On Feb. 11, 1982, the St. Louis Cardinals engineered one of their best trades ever, acquiring acrobatic shortstop Ozzie Smith from the San Diego Padres for fellow infielder Garry Templeton. Although Smith batted only .222 for the Padres in 1981, he would blossom into stardom in St. Louis. During his 15-year tenure with the Cardinals, the "Wizard of Oz" earned 14 All-Star Game berths and wore the cap pictured here during the 1996 Midsummer Classic. Smith was elected to enter the Hall of Fame in January 2002.
