Baseball Hall of Fame
Second Week in February
On Feb. 16, 1952, Hall of Famer Honus Wagner announced his retirement after a lifetime in baseball. The 77-year-old Wagner, who served for 40 years as a player and coach, used the bat and wore the shoes pictured here during his playing days. Nicknamed "The Flying Dutchman," the legendary shortstop batted .327 during his career and was one of the first five players elected to the Hall of Fame in 1936, along with Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson and Babe Ruth.
