Baseball Hall of FameThird Week in May
On May 17, 1998, David Wells wore this New York Yankees cap when he pitched the first perfect game at Yankee Stadium since Don Larsen's masterpiece in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series. In a remarkable coincidence, Wells achieved perfection as Larsen himself, who was honored by the Yankees earlier in the day, watched the game from a luxury box at the Stadium. (In yet another storybook twist, Wells and Larsen attended the same high school in San Diego.) Pitching the finest game of his well-traveled career, Wells struck out 10 batters in dominating the Minnesota Twins, 4-0.
