Third Week in July
On July 23, 1962, playing greats Jackie Robinson, Bob Feller and Edd Roush and managing legend Bill McKechnie were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Robinson, who wore the Brooklyn Dodgers jersey pictured here, became the first black player in 20th century Major League history when Branch Rickey promoted him from the Minor Leagues in 1947. Robinson was also the first African American elected to the shrine in Cooperstown. ... The owner of three career no-hitters, Feller won 266 games despite missing nearly four full seasons due to service in World War II. ... Roush won two National League batting titles on his way to compiling a lifetime .323 batting average. ... During a 25-year career as a manager, McKechnie won four National League pennants and captured two world championships -- with the 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates and the 1940 Cincinnati Reds.
