On July 26, 1948, ailing Hall of Famer Babe Ruth made his final public appearance when he visited the film premiere of "The Babe Ruth Story." One of the five original members of the Cooperstown shrine, the 53-year-old Ruth would succumb to throat cancer only three weeks later -- on Aug. 16 in New York City. Ruth, who previously wore the spikes and New York Yankees jersey featured here, had made an emotional final appearance at Yankee Stadium on June 13, when the team retired his uniform No. 3.
