Baseball Hall of FameFirst Week in October
On Oct. 1, 1961, Roger Maris of the New York Yankees used the bat pictured here to blast his 61st home run, eclipsing baseball's most glamorous record -- the single-season home run mark set by Babe Ruth in 1927. After enduring three consecutive games without a home run, Maris delivered the historic shot on the final day of the regular season against Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox. Maris' home run, which landed in the right-field bleachers at Yankee Stadium, accounted for all of the scoring in the Yankees' 1-0 win over the Red Sox. The home run ball was caught by a young man from Brooklyn named Sal Durante, who met with Maris after the game.
