Second Week in November
On Nov. 13, 1979, future Hall of Famer Willie Stargell won a share of the National League's MVP Award, emerging as co-winner along with Keith Hernandez of the St. Louis Cardinals. The occasion marked the first time in Major League history that two players finished in a tie in the MVP balloting. Stargell, who used the bat pictured here during the 1979 World Series, led the Pittsburgh Pirates to the NL playoffs -- and eventually the world championship. Stargell also became the first and only player to sweep MVP awards for the regular season, the Championship Series and the World Series in the same year. |
