Baseball Hall of FameFirst Week in December
On Dec. 1, 1965, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired light-hitting outfielder Matty Alou from the San Francisco Giants for catcher Ozzie Virgil and pitcher Joe Gibbon. Alou, who wore the Pirates jersey shown here, would win the National League batting crown with a .342 batting average in 1966, after hitting a scant .231 with the Giants in 1965. On the same day as the Alou trade, the Kansas City A's reacquired Minor League outfielder Joe Rudi from the Cleveland Indians. Rudi would eventually become a Gold Glove left fielder and a key member of the Oakland A's' world championship teams in 1972, '73, and ‘74.
