Baseball Hall of FameSecond Week in December
On Dec. 11, 1951, Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees announced his retirement. Playing in only 116 games during the 1951 season, "Joe D" batted a mediocre .263 with a mere 12 home runs. The Hall of Famer ended his career with a batting average of .325 and 361 home runs. DiMaggio passed up the chance to play the 1952 season for a potential salary of $100,000.
